CIRCLE
PAINTING - THE HORSE HOSPITAL LONDON
The home of experimental pop. James chose to use 12
electric guitar players - again in a 50 meter circle
- prefereably with very long hair and bad attitudes
and lots of tatoos and loud amplifiers. Stratocasters
on front pick up - lots of wammy bar .

CIRCLE
PAINTING - BERLIN ONE
COLLABORATION WITH LAND-ART B
The First Berlin Painting Composition
was written for twelve classical guitars - again in
a circle - 20 meters in diameter (smaller than the previous
circle due to the volume of the instruments). The imagery
is taken from the circular canvas - it looks like a
bell - a bell tower occupied by bells and sparrows or
refugee buderigars. The contrast between the intimidating
bells - intimidating in weight, volume and size - and
the small birds - fragile but fast in movement and whit
- is the image that drives the piece - a daily battle
for dominance - no one wins - coexistance, however uncomfortable,
is the only option. This is more apparent in the second
movement. |

CIRCLE
PAINTING - BERLIN TWO
COLLABORATION WITH LAND-ART |
|
|
| |
The
Berlin 2 Composition was based on photographs and films
of the event which took place in June (09) in an abondoned
railway roundhouse in East Berlin. The Painting is RED.
Three elements which came to James synchronistically
contributed to the composition (again using 12 musicians
- cellos - arranged in a 50 meter diameter circle but
this time with solo cello in the centre). 1. Photographs
of the costume Ivanov wore to paint the circle. It was
covered in red paiint and looked like a blood stiained
cross 2. images of the building -brutal and industrial
- railway tracks, huge iron doors, rotting wooded structure.
3. the cross of Jesus on the cover of CD of Bach's St
John's Passion. |

CIRCLE
PAINTING - RIVER THAMES
COLLABORATION WITH LAND-ART |
|
|
| |
Twenty
four hour non-stop work period - Friday 12th -
Saturday13th June 09. This first collaboration in the
Circle Painting project resulted in a short composition
which explores the physical space of a circle. It was
written for 9 violins and 3 cellos - Twelve musicians
take their place around the circumference of a 50m diameter
circle like the numbers of a clock – 12, 1, 2,
3.etc. The cellos are 5, 6 and 7 o'clock– the
listener is outside the circle a few feet away from
the cellos and 50 + meters away from violin one (placed
at 12o’clock). Dynamics are even throughout the
piece – “f”
The
space was created digitally and worked into - like a
painter works into a canvas. Throughout the period James
observed the movements of Ivanov and Chan as they worked
inside the circular canvas. James now plans to create
12 compositions based around the 12 circular canvasas
- next one BERLIN.

(Cellorhythmics Acoustic Project)
WCM (Working Classical Music) Orchestra |

"Cellorhythmics
Acoustic Project was a monthly series of 10 concerts,
devised by James Hesford and the classical cellist Alfia
Nakipbekova in collaboration with film maker/designer
Chiara Ambrosio.
Each
episode featured a new composition and a new instrument
was added to the ensemble. As the series continued the
group grew organically from a quartet to a small orchestra
- WCM (Working Classical Music)Orchestra,
The
concept of synchronicity and chance played an important
part in the creative process. Like using found objects
in sculpture, harmonic and rhythmic material, titles
and even additional instruments were sourced from whatever
presented itself as a “happy accident”.
The theme for each Episode was derived from the title
(“a found object”) of a new composition"
